Con Dao island is well-known for the most peaceful and pristine beaches in Vietnam and a strict nature reserve for its biodiversity especially sea turtle nesting. However, not many people know that Con Dao was once considered “Hell on Earth”, a horrendous evidence of the tragic history on the island, capturing the extreme sufferings of Vietnamese patriots during the colonial occupation and Vietnam War. The grim cells, haunting corridors, and brutal conditions of the Con Dao Prison have witnessed many heroic stories of the resilience of Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers.

In the Historical Con Dao tour, you are invited to delve into the poignant history of a nation that rose above grieves and losses, painting a vivid picture of Vietnam’s enduring spirit and cultural richness.

Guide pick you up at the meeting point (1920 Cafe – Con Dao Memory), starting the trip to:

Con Dao Museum is where the glorious history of the indomitable and resilient Vietnamese people comes to life through engaging exhibits with real documentaries and artifacts
Relic of the Lord palace: It served as the living and working place of 53 generations of Island Lord and Prison Lord.
Phu Hai Prison: the oldest and main prison of Con Dao Prison Complex. Behind the garden lay a system of brutal “tiger cages” and torture rooms.
French & America Tiger Cages: One of the most brutal torture methods.

The prisoners struggled to eat, sleep and even excrete while being kept in low, tiny, barded wire cages.

– Department of Cowshed: This is where cows were raised during French and American times. In fact, this place was used to torture prisoners by soaking them in cow dung.

Visit Hang Duong Cemetery – a must-see site in your historical tour. This 20-hectare cemetery is the house where thousands of Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers are resting in peace. We can put an incense to express deep gratitude to their great contribution for Vietnam’s independence today.

Visit Nui Mot Pagoda “Van Son Tu” – The shrine of Madame Phi Yen – a concubine of Lord Nguyen Anh.

12:00PM/ 6:00PM

This is end of journey. We will take you back to the hotel.

Can I visit the historical places in Con Dao by ourselves?

Absolutely yes. You totally can buy the tickets and visit the places by yourselves. However, a tour with local guide will help you a deeper understanding about the history as well as the anecdotes that have never been shared on internet or ChatGPT.

If I am not able drive motorbike or have no international licence, can I still join the tour?

As a tour operator, we definitely understand that driving a motorbike in Vietnam is quite a challenge for some of you. If the case happens in the tour, we are pleased to arrange a car for you with the extra charge at 300,000VND/ person.
