1.2. Special notes:

Because these are local buses, departure times can occasionally vary depending on the drivers’  schedule and… their “mood”, and the they rarely speak English. This option is perfect only if you have an open schedule and a Google Translate app ready on your phone.

When waiting for the bus, just keep an eye out for a sign on the front that reads “Phong Nha / Trooc” to make sure you are flagging down the right one.

If you are arriving in Dong Hoi via train or plane, here is how to smoothly connect with the local bus line:

• From Dong Hoi Railway Station: Walk or take a short ride (about 1.2 km) to the Nam Ly Bus Station area on To Huu Street. This is the most convenient and reliable spot to wait for and catch the bus to Phong Nha. 

I usually take a hidden shortcut that isn’t on Google Maps, but it’s really meant for locals. I wouldn’t recommend it for visitors—it’s way too easy to get turned around!

  Dong Hoi Train Station to the nearest bus stop

• From Dong Hoi Airport: Please note that local buses do not enter the airport terminal directly. We highly recommend taking a taxi or a motorbike taxi (xe ôm) to a nearby pickup point on National Highway 1A (Quốc lộ 1A) or Huu Nghi Street, where you can easily catch the bus as it passes.

Driven by the rising transit demands of both locals and independent tourists, the “Shared Car” (xe ghép) community has flourished. It functions like a localized ride-share network and is incredibly easy to use.

• How it works: Simply join one of the local Facebook transit groups and write a short post stating your travel date, desired departure time, pickup spot, and destination. Within minutes, available drivers will respond to offer you a seat.

• Fare: Fluctuates flexibly between 80,000 VND and 120,000 VND / seat / way.

Eg: Cần 2 ghế từ Quán Cà phê Tree Hugger đến Khách sạn Celia Phong Nha vào lúc 3:00pm, 24/6/2026. Xin chân thành cảm ơn.

Translated: I need [number of needed seats] seats from [pick-up point] to [drop-off point] at [time], [date]. Sincerely thanks.”
