WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT VIETNAM?
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
There is no exact answer to the question for the best time to visit Vietnam, it depends on which regions you are visiting. However, if you are planning to visit through the whole country, the period from late December to April the following year can be considered as the most wonderful time in term of weather conditions.
Vietnam is a long country which expands over 15 degrees of latitude, which creates the variety of weather conditions along the county entirely. Vietnam has both a tropical climate zone and a temperate climate zone, with all of the country experiencing the effects of the annual monsoon. Rainy seasons correspond to monsoon circulations, which brings heavy rainfall in the north and south from May to October, and in the central regions from September to January.
Vietnam by months
January
Overview
Vietnam starts the year with its best dry conditions expected nationwide. Both the north and south are gifted with sunshine whilst the central region gradually steps out of its rainy season, which means the coastal cities like Hoi An, Danang and Nha Trang are back to life (joining the in season Phu Quoc, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne). There is an opposite temperature between the two ends of the country with the south being in the proximity of its hottest and the north undergoing the cooler weather.
January’s weather in detail
North Vietnam
Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Cat Ba Islands, Ninh Binh & Mai Chau
January is regarded as one of the driest months of the year in the north. Though plenty of sunshine and clear blue skiescan be expected in this month, the temperature in the north stays quite cool with the average temperature is at 18°C (or even lower at the higher elevations like SaPa, Ha Giang or Mu Cang Chai). Precipitation is at its lowest in the north yetmisty haze is quite common, especially in coastal areas and around Halong Bay (Cat Ba island, for instance).
Central Vietnam
Phong Nha, Hue, Hoi An, Danang, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat & Central Highlands
In January, the weather in the central Vietnam is getting better as the wet season comes to an end while the downpour is not on the cards. The average temperature during this month is 23°C. It’s the time for the beaches at Hoi An, Danang and Nha Trang to take off their winter coats and come back to their glory days; meanwhile, Dalat and the Central Highlands are dry but chilly, especially at night so suitable clothing is recommended.
The Central Vietnam witnesses the obvious split of the weather condition between Hue and Danang due to the Hai Van Pass. With the height at 496m above the sea level, Hai Van Pass works as the wall to block all the rainfall in Hue and open up the sunshine on the other side of the range which is in Da Nang.
South Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Con Dao & Phu Quoc
January is absolutely the right month for the ones in need of sea-time. The south Vietnam is in the middle of the dry season in January with some of the best conditions of the year; blue skies and little, if any, rain anticipated in the region. The beaches within easy reach from Ho Chi Minh City like Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Phu Quoc and Con Dao Islands are basking in sunshine. Bikinis and swimwear can’t be missed in your suitcase.
Festivals to consider:
The Tet holiday, also known as Lunar New Year which falls in late January or early February (depending on the lunar calendar), is a significant cultural event in Vietnam that can greatly impact your trip to this beautiful country.
Please be well-prepared for the quietness of cities and towns or the limited operating hours of many businesses, shops, and restaurants. It is important to plan ahead and make necessary arrangements for accommodations, transportation, and meals during this time.

March

I would say March is the best time to visit Vietnam. The north and northern center are at their transition between spring and summer, offering the most fabulous conditions with dry, bright weather and the moderate temperature. Meanwhile, the beaches of the south and central regions are covered by hot weather with blue skies and sunshine. March is one of the best months for star fruit and rambutan, so make sure you don’t miss these sweet fruits during your trip in the south. Diving and snorkeling conditions continue to be considered excellent around the island of Con Dao in this month.
Festival to consider:
Don’t be surprised by the flowers and gifts sold along the streets in the cities and towns on March 8th. Vietnamese celebrate the day because it’s the International Women’s day. You may get some discount but also prepare for the higher-priced services and long queue for this day.
April
Overview
Vietnam continues the pleasant weather condition of the transitional period in April. This time of the year brings the whole S-shaped country a delightful, bright climate with temperatures rising and rainfall decreasing. Another wonderful month for exploring Vietnam's diverse landscapes and cultural treasures. Absolutely, April is the right time to visit Vietnam.

Although the period between December and April is considered the best time to visit Vietnam, the other months have their own charms. However, things are getting harder and harder to forecast due to the climate changes. The hot weather is becoming more extreme (in some parts, the temperatures can rise to 43°C (109.5°F in the summer) and the stormy season can stay with us longer. Hence, stay tuned for any changes during your trip to make sure that you can adapt with whatever the weather brings to you.
